Police use stun gun on 6-year-old
A Miami police officer has used a stun gun on a six-year-old boy to keep him from cutting himself with a piece of broken glass, sparking controversy.

Miami-Dade County police chief Bobby Parker has defended the officer’s decision.

“Had the child cut his vein and the officer had not tasered the child, somebody would be saying, ‘well, you had the taser, why didn’t you taser the child’,” Mr Parker told the Miami Herald newspaper.

A taser is a gun which fires an incapacitating electric charge of 50,000 volts.

At least one local official and many residents have questioned the police officer’s actions.

“I really can’t believe they did that,” County Commissioner Joe Martinez told the newspaper. “This might be a good opportunity to review our policy.”

Hunting chimps may change view of human evolution By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

Chimpanzees have been seen using spears to hunt bush babies, U.S. researchers said on Thursday in a study that demonstrates a whole new level of tool use and planning by our closest living relatives.

Perhaps even more intriguing, it was only the females who fashioned and used the wooden spears, Jill Pruetz and Paco Bertolani of Iowa State University reported.

Bertolani saw an adolescent female chimp use a spear to stab a bush baby as it slept in a tree hollow, pull it out and eat it.

“This is just an innovative way of having to make up for a pretty harsh environment,” Pruetz said in a telephone interview. The chimps must come down from trees to gather food and rest in dry caves during the hot season.

“It is similar to what we say about early hominids that lived maybe 6 million years ago and were basically the precursors to humans.”

Chimpanzees are genetically the closest living relatives to human beings, sharing more than 98 percent of our DNA. Scientists believe the precursors to chimps and humans split off from a common ancestor about 7 million years ago.

Chimps are known to use tools to crack open nuts and fish for termites. Some birds use tools, as do other animals such as gorillas, orangutans and even naked mole rats.

But the sophisticated use of a tool to hunt with had never been seen.

Pruetz thought it was a fluke when Bertolani saw the adolescent female hunt and kill the bush baby, a tiny nocturnal primate.

But then she saw almost the same thing. “I saw the behavior over the course of 19 days almost daily,” she said.

Hiding her face from the cameras, astronaut Lisa Nowak returned to Texas on Wednesday, a day after being charged in Florida with trying to murder the woman she believed was her romantic rival for a space shuttle pilot’s affections.
Nowak’s arrest was a remarkable downfall for a woman whose life seemed to be on a perfect trajectory until a few months ago.
In November, a neighbor reported hearing the sounds of dishes being thrown inside Nowak’s Houston-area home, and the police came. And weeks ago, Nowak and her husband separated after 19 years.
The final unraveling came this week after police arrested her for allegedly trying to kidnap a woman she believed was her rival for the affections of astronaut William Oefelein.
Police charged Nowak with attempting to murder Colleen Shipman based on weapons and other items found with Nowak or in her car: pepper spray, a BB-gun, a new steel mallet, knife and rubber tubing.

Did Captain Kirk ever have this kind of problem with Yeoman Rand and Nurse Chapel?

When this kid planned all this out it probably sounded funny as hell, but apparently regardless of how good a student he was he has yet to learn one of life’s little lessons… Things don’t always go as planned.

A high school lunch period was disrupted Monday by a greased, naked student who ran around screaming and flailing his arms until police twice used a stun gun on him, authorities said.

Taylor Killian, 18, had rubbed his body with grapeseed oil to keep from being caught, and got up after the first time he was shocked to continue running toward a group of frightened students huddled in a corner at Westerville North High School, Lt. Jeff Gaylor said.

“That prank went a little farther than he intended, I guess,” Gaylor said.

Officer Doug Staysniak was monitoring the lunch period when Killian, with long hair and a full beard, ran in the room toward students, who screamed and ran away. The officer is normally assigned to a middle school and did not recognize Killian as a student, Gaylor said.

Police said that an administrator ordered Killian to stop, but that the student made a sexual gesture and kept running.

Killian is in jail and charged with inducing panic, public indecency, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. A message seeking comment was left at Killian’s home.

School officials reported that Killian was a good student, Gaylor said. There was no indication of substance abuse or a medical problem.

Hey Taylor, the key to being the class clown is to get OTHER people to do stupid stuff, not to do it yourself… that’s what friends are for.

As of Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at least 3,005 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003.
